Preventing water damage after winter

Preventing water damage after winter

Spring has almost sprung, but before it’s too late, there are a couple of steps to take so winter weather won’t come back to bite you. Besides the obvious like snow causing a roof collapse, winter weather poses a silent threat. Freezing water sitting for all of the winter thaws when the weather warms up in the spring and could lead to insidious problems like cracks, obstructions, and water damage.

Not to worry though, we are here to make sure you proactively avoid these issues by taking our advice! Here are our top tips to avoid spring thaw water damage:

  1. Remove any snow around your house (not that we got much this season here in Maryland) so thawed snow drains away from your home. Remove obstructions or debris so there is a clear path for water to move away from your house.
  2. Do routine maintenance on your gutters, downspouts, and drains. If not properly inspected, these could cause flooding. Again, make sure any debris, ice, and snow are gone so water moves away from your home.
  3. Inspect your roof! We are more than happy to refer you to a great roofing company so you can ensure the roof is well equipped for storms and keeping any water from coming inside your home.
  4. Purchase flood insurance with us. Unbeknownst to some, homeowners policies do not include flood damage so a separate policy is needed. We definitely recommend not waiting any longer so you already have the flood insurance should a claim arise. Never wait until it’s too late!

Finally, remember we are a great resource! We created our agency with one goal in mind: help our clients sleep better at night. If you have any questions or concerns about your coverage, we are more than happy to help. Happy Spring and good riddance winter!
